Summer can be a great time to think about the space in our homes and how we can make the most of it.

If you have a spare room or area in your home that has turned into a place where you pile the junk and clutter, it might be time to consider how you can make the most of that space.

Below are a few ideas for how you can get the most out of your spare room.

  • Snug/chill out room – create a space for all things chill: to sit and relax, read, listen to music or to enjoy some quiet time for yourself.
  • Home office – since the pandemic, a lot of office-based workers have found themselves working at home more. If you’re sat working at the kitchen table, why not consider turning a spare room into a home office/study? It could even double up as a space for the kids to do their homework.
  • Create a hobby room – a place for painting, sewing, gaming, playing an instrument – whatever you are into, why not consider creating a room for you to focus on your hobby?
  • Play room – got little ones? A designated play room is a great way to keep living spaces toy free!
  • Wellbeing room – how about a space for channelling your inner Zen? A space to meditate or do yoga would be a great way to relax when you need a bit of downtime.
  • Dressing room/walk-in wardrobe – into fashion and have lots of clothes? Think like Carrie Bradshaw and create your own walk-in wardrobe or dressing room where you can enjoy getting ready in peace before a night out.
  • Cinema room – Family film nights will never be the same again! Why not create your own cinema room with comfy sofa and big screen TV? You could even get a sound bar and speakers and keep it nice and dark for the full cinema experience.
  • Laundry room – If you are tired of seeing laundry drying around the house and washing piled high, why not create a laundry room for your clothes to dry, which could even be the ironing room too.
  • Pet room – what about a designated space for all your pets’ things, including space to clean and dry them after walks and being outside?

If all the rooms in your home are in use you can still have a big summer clear-out to make the most of your space and even free up room for some of the ideas mentioned above.

Here are some important factors to consider when having a big tidy up:

  • Make a list of what rooms/cupboards you are going to tidy.
  • Be ruthless – if you really don’t think you need something, get rid!
  • Arrange suitable, sustainable disposal and don’t forget about charity shops.
  • Freshen up your rooms –, a lick of paint, pictures, plants and ornaments can really brighten a room and space up this summer and give it a whole new lease of life.
